Evaluation

"Evaluation"

The media product follows the conventions of real, existing music magazines such as “Mixmag” which follows similar conventions as the magazine follows the same genres of music. The product made follows the same conventions as “Mixmag” by including the similar key issues however the product is displayed in a different way. In terms of design, the “Mixmag” music magazine provided me with a lot of inspiration as the magazine is displayed in a very attractive way in which would appear to the target audience. An example in which I have followed is by using the medium close shot which captures the audience as it is the main image on the front cover. This design idea came from “Mixmag” and is very effective in attracting the target audience. Another feature in which I have used from “Mixmag” is the style in which the text is displayed on the design which makes the magazine look more interesting to read.

The product can be related to particular social groups which is essential in trying to captivate and engage the target audience. The three pieces create a mixed representation of gender because although the pictures feature male artists, the colours can appeal to the female audience. The representation of the magazine is typical of a dance music magazine which bright colours, interesting fonts and other techniques used in which are common in the dance music area. "Mixmag" is a close related example of a similar magazine as it advertises similar music, with traditional colours used consistently throughout the magazine and bold images on the front covers to appeal to the target audience.

"EMAP" are the music institution in which distribute "Global Dance." The company is well renowned for distributing dance music magazines around the globle, especially across Europe. EMAP is a British media company, specialising in the production of business-to-business magazines, and the organisation of business events and conferences. EMAP are responsible for the launch of the popular "Mixmag" dance magazine and due to its great success, you can predict that "Global Dance" under the same organisation can be distributed to also become a global success. EMAP are extremely suitable for launching our magazine "Global Dance" as they succesfully delivered "Mixmag" to its target audience which is pratcially the same as that of "Global Dance" so by this information, you can only see success in "Global Dance" being delivered to its target audience succesfully.

The target audience for this magazine ages from approximately 16-30. The target audience thinks music is a vital part of their lives as they could be clubbing at the weekend or partying. The reader is outgoing, active, energetic and exuberant. Its for people who want to stay up to date with the latest music, events and up and coming albums from across the world. The magazine is suitable for the target audience because it gives them everything that a dance music lover needs to know. It keeps the reader up to date with "Global Dance" hence the name, and provides everything in which a dance music lover needs in a dance music magazine.

The magazine is succesful in appealing to its target audience for obvious reasons. The name "Global Dance" immedietly sticks out to any dance music lover and attracts them and the front cover provides similar traits to that of "Mixmag" a very closely related magazine. This is positive in attracting the target audience because the target audience is able to notice traits easier that resemble their interests and therefore attract them to buy the magazine. The cover mount of the magazine provides the target audience with attractive colours, images and predominetly information in which appeals to the target audience.
The magazine will satisfy the readers needs very well as the magazine covers all aspects of dance music and recognises talent and portrays it extemely well. The magazine recognises factors that are important to the target audience of "Global Dance" such as music, clubbing, festivals, style, albums and much more and includes all of this to a quality standard.

I've gained the ability to be able to use new technological skills relating to the use of photo shop and producing quality images through the use of the camera for a media product. Through Adobe' Photo shop I have been able to produce a media product to a high standard using different techniques. My existing technological skills have improved as I am now able to produce magazine front covers, contents pages and double page spreads through the use of Adobe' photo shop. Towards the end of this project I was able to establish how to set up a blog and after practice effectively put a project together after getting to grips with uploading images.

Since the preliminary task, I feel as though I have gained a better understanding of how to produce a media product which relates to the target audience and being able to produce a mount on a page that is of good quality and easily relatable for the target audience. The product produced in my preliminary task was very vague and not very well presented. Though I believe that has consequently helped me in being able to establish what is needed in a good media product that appeals to the target audience which I believe my products achieve. I've learnt a variety of skills such as technological skills in which help me to make a media product although I believe the most important is being able to understand what needs to be included in a media product through understanding who your target audience is.

Camera Shots

"Camera Shots"

“Global Dance” will try to vary the use of the camera shots for the magazine creation in order to make the magazine attractive and effective in its purpose to attract the target audience. Low angle shots are likely to be implemented as they show the figure to be powerful and important and also can be referred to as inspiring therefore I think this is suitable for a dance magazine because one of the beliefs in dance is to always look up and forward which can refer to low angle camera shots.

To the left is an example of an Eye-level shot of the music producers "Chase and Status"

This is an example of a high angle shot of the dance DJ legend “Paul Oakenfold.”

Costume

Costume and Ideas

The above clothing is typical for parties and for clubbing, the fashions consists of clothing from brands such as Lyle and Scott, Fred Perry, Gio Goi, Lacoste, Polo Ralph Lauren, Henleys and vans for example. These are recognisably traditional styles of clothing for people who go to parties and clubbing. Lyle and Scott is a traditional brand which people wear when they go clubbing and to parties. This style of clothing is attractive to the target audience and this style of clothing is going to feature on magazine as it represents the interest of the reader therefore entices the target audience to want to read the magazine.
"Locations"

These locations are typical for the target audience of “Global Dance” as the locations all represent interests and fun for them. Musical festivals, parties and clubs are the kind of places in which intrigue the dance loving audience therefore it is important to represent the target audiences’ passion in the choice of location.

Analysis of Questionnaire Results

To produce my music magazine I need to know who I am trying to connect with in my magazine otherwise known as the target audience. By creating a questionnaire I am able to find out more about what people like about music magazines and by analysing the results I can implement some key factors into the creation of my magazine in order to attract the target audience.

I have created a questionnaire relating to a music magazine and completed 10 questionnaires from music fans randomly.

From my results I have discovered that a great majority of my target audience fall into the 18 – 20 category. This is most probably because of the fact that the legal age to go clubbing is 18 in which my main target audience falls into and clubbing is possibly the biggest interest for music lovers from this age category. However I have also found out from my results that the 15 – 18 category should also be recognised as there are people within this category who are fanatic music lovers.

Dance music has been proven the most popular with my results as 8 out of the ten questionnaires voted for dance music as there favourite genre with R&B and Hip/Hop also receiving one vote each. So my questionnaires told me that 80% of people considered dance music as there favourite music genre. These people mostly fell into the 18 – 20 category which gives me the impression of dance music relates to clubbing and therefore attracts a large target audience.

I also was keen to know how often people visited night clubs or parties from my largest specified audience being the 18 – 20 category. From my results I have discovered that the majority visit night clubs or go to parties twice a week. Out of ten questionnaires 8 of them said that they attend clubs and parties at least twice a week. This indicates to me that the target audience are fans of raving and clubbing therefore ideas such as club reviews in my magazine are very relevant.

70% of my candidates said that they would pay up between £3-4 for a quality music magazine whereas 10% said they would pay £4 or more and the final 10% would pay between £2-50-3.

From my results I have discovered that the whole 100% of my candidates want to see artist reviews, Gig/festival reviews, music reviews, music charts, competitions and club reviews in a music magazine which has given me specific articles to implement into my new music magazine. The most attractive feature to the reader from my results on the front cover is information on what’s inside. This tells me that the majority of the target audience want to know what is in the magazine first and foremost so therefore I need to ensure that the magazine has quality within as this is what will entice the target audience to buy my music magazine.
